 Current Research

Alfred's lab of Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Breeding is conducting research to improve the genetics of  ornamental and specialty crops, incorporating genetics, genomics, molecular biology and biotechnology.

Genetics and Molecular Breeding to understand temperature effect on lettuce seed germination and flowering, dissecting molecular mechanisms underlying temperature response of lettuce during flower and seed germination, and leaf senescence of multiple plant species (Lettuce, tomato, chili, and more!)

Citrus Research to optimize the regeneration and genetic transformation protocols of citrus mature tissue. By optimizing these techniques, this work aims to refine these techniques to improve plant recovery and genetic modification success rates. By overcoming these barriers, this research contributes to the development of gene-edited citrus rootstocks, which hold potential for improved disease resistance, adaptability, and overall sustainability in citrus production.

Marigold breeding to develop novel traits, including unique flower colors, and to enhance the lutein and zeaxanthin content. This project involves developing plant regeneration protocols for African and French marigolds, optimizing transformation techniques for marigold varieties, investigating the genetic basis of carotenoid metabolism in marigold genotypes, and applying gene-editing technologies to marigolds.
